MY DESIGN PROCESS:

My typical design process for a medium-range design project is:

  • Initial Meeting:   During the initial meeting with you at your home, I will be finding out from you what the overall goals for your project are.  These goals might include: the type of landscape spaces you are looking for; the style and character you would like these spaces to have; the budget you have for your project; as well as the level of maintenance you are anticipating.  At some point during this initial meeting, I will do a walk through with you to see the existing landscape first hand and discuss any issues that we come across.  If time allows during the initial meeting, I will also measure and draw up a rough base plan of the area, as well as the beginnings of a design concept. In order to confirm that the design is heading in the direction you like, I will touch base with you before leaving the site to allow for you to have a quick review of the rough concept.  If time doesn’t allow me to start a concept during the first visit, I will review the concept with you during either a second visit, or via e-mail/phone.

  • Design Development:   Based on the input you have given me during your review of the concept, I will then develop the landscape plan to more detail.  Pictures of the various plants and materials recommended in the design will also be assembled. If desired, your landscape contractor will be given a copy of the plan from which they can develop an installation estimate.

  • Plan Review:   At your home, I’ll present the plan to you and go over it in detail.  I can also help you review your landscape contractor’s proposal for the installation of the landscape.  If needed, adjustments can be made to the plan in order to accommodate your budget for the installation.

  • Installation:   After the design is complete and you have selected a landscape contractor, I can also assist, if needed, with the implementation of the work.  This may include final material selections, on site layout of various design elements, working with the contractor’s supervisor.  I do not normally work as the general contractor for larger projects.  For projects involving many types of work, I usually recommend working with an experienced Landscaping firm to act as the General Contractor.  If you do not have an established relationship with a landscape contractor, I have close working relationships with several landscape contractors who I trust will do an excellent job at implementing your design.

Variations of the Above Process:   Based on the level of complexity of the project as well as the preferences of the

customer, the above process can be modified to be either simpler or more involved.
